Goals/Milestones

stray cats 2009-01compressed

Our Goals

  • Reduce the intake of feral and free-roaming cats to local shelters by 10% within 5 years.
  • See a drop in the euthanasia rates at area shelters by 15% in 5 years.
  • Have an operational foster system for tame stray cats and young kittens, so that socialized cats and socializable kittens can find homes.
  • Educate the public so that owned cats are spayed and neutered, and cats that owners can no longer care for are put in other homes or shelters and not abandoned.
  • Establish a low-cost spay and neuter clinic locally.
  • Trap and neuter existing colonies, with the goal of getting at least 80% of each colony sterilized.
  • Oversee responsible and humane care of colonies so that free-roaming cats get their basic needs fulfilled, and do not create a nuisance for neighbors in the community.

Milestones

  • At the end of November, 2010, Michiana Feral has spayed/neutered 555 cats and kittens!
  • Michiana Feral is supporting seven local families with food for their feral and stray cat colonies.
  • Amendments have been written for the South Bend, Mishawaka and St. Joseph county ordinances, and are awaiting hearing by the councils.
